Got this email from a friend and was wondering if anyone else has heard about this. Not too sure I want to register my cell phone with the government. They already know too much about me. :)

Cell Numbers Going Public!!!

JUST A REMINDER, 3 days from today, cell phone numbers
will be released to telemarketing companies.

If you receive sale calls, YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS!
These telemarketers will eat up your free minutes and end
up costing you money in the long run. To prevent this, call
the following number from your cell phone: 888/382-1222 or go to www.donotcall.gov

It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It only takes a minute of
your time. Your number will be blocked for five (5) years.

Christine..I did hear something regarding this a little ways back..Hubby mentioned something about telemarketers being able to access your cell numbers..he was not to happy about this either. But I did not hear anything about the Do No Call list..I agree..don't get me started with our government...lol

Hhhmmm you got me wondering what we will do now too...

Thank you for sharing girlfriend...

Hi Kim... :)

I'm now thinking if I don't answer the call I can't be charged for it. I usually only answer cell numbers I know anyways.

I know what you mean about the governemnt.... ;)

*big hugs*

Thanks Christine for sharing this info. I went in and registered both my home phone and my cell. I get alot of stupid calls at home! I usually just hang up, but they will just call back in a few days.

Don't you just love the ones that are a recording, and want you to call them back?? I got one so often, I called them back, and it was someone looking to sell something, I told them never to call this number again. They haven't so
far.

I feel if the govt wants your number bad enough, they will find it somehow.
Nothing is personal anymore.
sad world we live in....

Sent the info about the cell phones to my brothers and one of them wrote back with this.... sorry if I alarmed anyone. I'm going to bookmark Hoaxkill.com for future reference...

This one is partly true, the phone number and website are links to the national Do Not Call list for any telephone number, not just cell phones. The rest is wrong.

According to the Federal Trade Commission,

It is already illegal to use utodialers on cell phone numbers, which eliminates most telemarketers.
There is no national cell phone directory maintained by the Government.
There is no cutoff date for registering any phone number with the registry, including cell phones.
This message was probably started when several wireless providers planned to create a 411 directory for cell phones. That directory will not be given out and will only be available to people who call in and pay a fee and it is only with the subscribers permission.

Be careful though, there are some Do Not Call scams where for a mere $3 per month they will put you on the FTC's Do Not Call list. If someone calls you claiming to be from the FTC and want to put you on the list for money, hang up. Call the FTC's number or connect to the website and do it yourself for free.
